Learning to downwind doesn't have to be a struggle

Learning to downwind can be hard and there are many ways to go about it. I'm a strong believer in building good foundations and identify weaknesses to work on. The analogy I often use is "you don't train for an ironman by doing multiple ironman races". You train all the parts (running, cycling and swimming). The same applies to downwind foiling. You can break it into a number of skill sets as outlined in my blogs, especially this one. I've always felt that downwinding is the sum of the parts. The better you are at the parts, the easier it is for you to learn.

Coaching can be a great tool to help you work on these skillsets and get individual feedback and cues to improve and refine your technique, helping you build your skillsets and foundations in order to make downwinding easy. As I find the beginner phases are more down to individuals mastering some key basics, I tend not to coach these face to face as the "time to competence" is hugely down to the individual and depends on how quickly they can understand certain skills and how much time they have. Therefore I tend to steer beginners towards the Coach Casey Club, a platform that hugely benefited me when I was learning. For those able to paddle up and foil downwind a bit, but looking to refine their technique and improve their foiling I do offer individual coaching.

Coach Casey Club

I’m stoked to be one of the coaches in the Coach Casey Club, an awesome online community for those looking for online coaching from some of the best coaches and of course James Casey.

If you’re keen to join up for the Coach Casey Club – you can sign up using my referral link and kick off your journey!

What do you get as part of the Coach Casey Club with the basic membership?

  • Access to the coaching facebook group where you can ask questions either to be discussed in the regular Talkback Tuesday coaching calls or on the Facebook page where all the coaches and members can chime in with tips, suggestions and next steps. These calls can also be played back and you have access to the entire archive of calls.
  • Access to the online learning modules that have been created by James. These modules are super in depth and break down the technique, allowing you to study them at your own pace. Next to the modules there are also training plans you can follow if training for a specific event.

Premium Membership (Contact for more details)

For those wanting a more bespoke or personalised online coaching experience. I offer a limited number of  spots for premium coaching which includes the following:

  • Same basis as the basic membership
  • Bi-weekly check in call to discuss any progress and any blockers.
  • Monthly detailed call to run through individual video analysis

Individual Coaching

For those in the Netherlands (or wherever I may happen to be), I also offer the opportunity to do face to face coaching. This could be in the form of:

  • Paddle up clinics
  • DW coaching runs (max 2 persons, minimum level required)
  • 1 on 1 coaching
  • Video analysis sessions (feedback, comments, pointers based on footage provided by you)

My aim with these coaching sessions would be to give you coaching cues in real time allowing you to make adjustments to your technique with my feedback and to combine this with some video analysis where possible. Really we can tailor the session to suit your level and requirements.

If you’re interested in finding out more about any of the above coaching options, feel free to reach out to me for more information.
